A proper woodland walk rather than a manicured attraction, Seven Acre Wood delivers exactly what it promises - seven acres of Essex forest you can actually get lost in without worrying you've stumbled into someone's back garden. The paths wind through decent native woodland, the sort of place where you might spot nuthatches if you're quiet enough, and where the light filters through in that particular way that makes you forget Dunmow exists just down the road.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a destination in itself - more a 45-minute detour that adds something real to a morning's rambling. The paths are well-trodden enough that you won't need navigation skills, but they're not so manicured that it feels like you're trudging through a country park. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after half an hour; there's no playground nonsense or viewing platforms, just trees.
