Shah Jahan Mosque

Just outside Woking sits one of Britain's most striking religious buildings - a proper mosque that looks like it's been transplanted straight from the Mughal courts. The Shah Jahan Mosque is the real deal: white marble domes, intricate tilework, and a minaret that catches the light beautifully across the Surrey countryside. Built in the 1980s, it's an unexpected architectural statement in the Home Counties.

Inside, the prayer hall takes your breath away. Detailed calligraphy covers the walls, natural light floods through carefully placed windows, and the whole space feels genuinely serene rather than touristy. You don't need to be Muslim to appreciate what's on show here - the craftsmanship and design speak for themselves. Visitors are welcome, though you'll want to check opening times and respect prayer times beforehand. Shoes off, obviously.

It's worth a morning or early afternoon visit if you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Warren Farm is closest at just over two miles away. The mosque sits in pleasant grounds, so allow an hour to look around properly without rushing. Families with older kids will get more from it than toddlers, frankly, and history enthusiasts or architecture buffs should definitely pencil it in. The interior photography rules are worth checking before you go, as some visitors prefer to experience it without cameras anyway.

Not a vast detour from Woking itself, and a genuine reminder that Surrey's got more going on architecturally than you'd expect.
