Shelly's Wood sits just outside Stevenage, offering a proper woodland escape without the tourist circus. It's a straightforward forest - the kind where you can actually hear yourself think, with dense tree cover and unmade paths threading through.The walks here are gentle rather than dramatic. You're looking at leafy trails, dappled light filtering through, and that satisfying crunch underfoot. It's not a dramatic spectacle - there's no waterfall or ancient monument to photograph. What you get instead is the simple fact of being among trees, which sounds basic until you're actually doing it on a Saturday afternoon when everywhere else is rammed.Families with young kids will find it fine for an hour or so, though there's not much to punctuate the walk - no playground, no café, no visitor centre. Serious walkers might use it as part of a longer route, but it's not a destination in itself. It's more the sort of place you slip into when staying at Church Farm Ardeley just down the road - a quick leg-stretch between other plans rather than a reason to visit Hertfordshire on its own.Go early if you can, when the paths are quieter and you've got half a chance of spotting birds. Bring wellies if it's been wet - these woodland floors hold moisture. Free access as far as I can tell, which at least removes the entry fee question.
