Shute Shelve Cavern

Deep beneath the Mendip Hills, this lesser-known cave system sits quietly in the shadow of its famous neighbour, Wookey Hole. The entrance is modest - a simple opening that gives little hint of the chambers within. Once inside, you'll find yourself in a network of limestone passages carved by centuries of water flow, with stalactites and flowstone formations that catch your torch beam in unexpected ways.

Families with older children who aren't fazed by tight spaces will find plenty to explore here, though it's not the polished tourist experience you'll get at the bigger show caves. The lack of formal lighting means you'll need proper torches, and sturdy footwear is essential as the floor can be slippery.

The formations aren't as spectacular as Cheddar Gorge's caves, but there's something satisfying about discovering them for yourself.

If you're staying at one of the nearby campsites around Cheddar - Mendip Basecamp or Petruth Paddocks are both within easy reach - this makes for a good half-day adventure when the weather turns.
