Silloth on Solway Golf Club

The links course at Silloth sits right on the Solway Firth, and on a clear day you're playing with views across to Scotland. It's a proper seaside track - windswept, occasionally brutal, and absolutely worth a round if you've got any sort of golf game.

The course itself is challenging without being pretentious. You'll get natural hazards galore: rough rough, links-style greens that feed balls away from where you want them, and wind that'll test your course management. It's the sort of place where a decent amateur can feel like they're playing real golf, not just whacking balls around a municipal track. Allow four hours minimum, maybe four and a half if you're not flying round.

This is squarely for golfers. Non-players won't find much to do here, though the location alone - that view across the firth - makes it worth driving to Silloth for even if you're just watching from the clubhouse with a coffee. The nearest town is Wigton, about ten minutes' drive away.

If you're staying at Stanwix Park or Solway Holiday Park - both right on the coast - you've got the course practically on your doorstep. Even North Lakes Country Park, three miles south, makes this an easy detour. Green fees vary by membership status, so check the website before you head over. Winter can be rough here, so spring through early autumn is your sweet spot.
