Site of Stamford Castle

There's not much left of Stamford Castle now - just earthworks and a bit of masonry tucked away in the Northamptonshire countryside near the Georgian stone town of Stamford. But that's rather the point. What you're looking at are the remains of a Norman castle that once dominated this landscape, gradually falling into obscurity until it became just another field with bumps in it. The site itself is accessible and free, though there's no visitor infrastructure to speak of. You can walk the perimeter and trace where the motte and bailey once stood, getting a genuine sense of how the landscape has reclaimed what medieval power built. Bring an ordnance survey map - it helps. History buffs will find it worthwhile, particularly if you're already exploring Stamford itself, which is genuinely one of England's finest stone-built towns. Walking it takes perhaps thirty minutes if you're thorough, less if you just want the photographs. Children might find it underwhelming unless they're into archaeology or castle ruins - it won't grab their attention the way an intact fortress would. If you're staying at Stamford Meadows Glamping just down the road, it's a perfectly reasonable morning excursion to combine with the town's churches and high street. The Nest Glamping and Rockingham Forest Park are both close enough that you could make this a small detour in a broader park-based holiday, though honestly you'll get more from wandering Stamford's streets than lingering over earthworks.
