Slieve Bearnagh

Walking up Slieve Bearnagh feels like entering another world. This distinctive peak in the Mourne Mountains rises to 739 metres and offers some of Northern Ireland's most dramatic mountain scenery, complete with a remarkable granite tor that crowns the summit like an ancient castle.

The climb from the Silent Valley car park takes about two hours, following well-marked paths that wind through heather moorland and granite outcrops. It's proper hill walking rather than a gentle stroll - you'll need decent boots and weather-appropriate kit. But the effort pays off spectacularly. From the rocky summit, the entire Mourne range spreads out before you, with the Irish Sea glinting beyond Newcastle.

Experienced walkers will love the challenge and the views. Families with teenagers who don't mind a workout will find it rewarding too, though younger children might struggle with the distance and terrain. The tor itself is great fun to scramble around, offering countless photo opportunities.

Given its location near Newcastle, Slieve Bearnagh fits perfectly into a camping holiday in the area. The Rock Caravan and Camping sits just 2.5 miles away, while Tollymore Campsite offers another base at 3.6 miles. Both put you within striking distance of multiple Mourne peaks. Allow a full day for the round trip, and check the weather - these mountains can turn nasty quickly.
