Slieve Croob

The walk up Slieve Croob takes roughly two hours from the car park, and on a clear day the views across County Down are genuinely impressive - you can see right across to Strangford Lough and beyond. It's a proper hill walk rather than a gentle stroll, so come prepared with decent boots and a map. The summit sits at 1,745 feet, which doesn't sound high until you're halfway up and your legs start complaining.

This is one for walkers with some fitness. The path climbs steadily through moorland, and while it's not technical, it demands respect - especially in poor weather when visibility drops fast. Families with younger children might find it a bit of a slog, though teenagers who like a challenge will eat it up.

You'll need your own transport to get here, and there's a small car park near Castlewellan. Admission is free, naturally. Allow a half-day minimum if you want to do the walk properly and actually enjoy the views rather than rush down. Go on a weekday if possible - weekends bring crowds, and the narrow paths get congested.

It works well as part of a broader walking holiday in the area. Slieve Croob Camping sits just over a mile away and would make a solid base, though you've got proper caravan parks at Lakeside View and Escape Glamping if you want more facilities. The surrounding countryside is walker-friendly, so you could easily combine this with other local hills without driving far.
