Source of the River Lagan

The Lagan starts here, in the rolling hills between Lisburn and Castlereagh, and if you're expecting some dramatic spring or a marked monument, you'll be disappointed. What you actually get is a quiet walk into proper countryside, following a tiny stream uphill until you reach the source - basically a damp patch on the mountainside where water begins its long journey to Belfast. It's the kind of place that appeals to walkers with a sense of purpose rather than tourists chasing Instagram moments.

The walk itself is the draw. Starting from near Castlewellan, you'll climb through farmland and rough moorland, watching a trickle of water gradually become a proper stream. On a clear day the views across County Down are excellent. Allow a good two hours return, more if you're taking photographs or stopping for a picnic. Waterproof boots are essential - the ground gets boggy nearer the source.

Families with confident walkers will manage it fine, though younger kids might find the landscape a bit bleak and featureless. History buffs won't find much to grip them here. This is really for people who enjoy walking itself, not just the destination.

It's free and accessible year-round, though winter makes it muddier and steeper. If you're camped at Slieve Croob Camping or Pine Tree Hollow Glamping nearby, it's a logical half-day expedition. Worth doing once if you're in the area. Don't expect revelations, but the walk beats sitting still.
