Sligrachan Hill

The walk up Sligrachan Hill takes about ninety minutes if you're moving at a decent pace, and the effort pays off with proper views across the Firth of Clyde toward Bute and beyond. It's not a technical climb - more a sustained trudge through moorland with decent paths most of the way - which makes it accessible without being trivial. You'll start from near Dunoon and gain roughly 300 metres, so it's the sort of walk that leaves you feeling like you've actually done something, but doesn't require crampons or a rescue team.

Walkers will absolutely get the most from this. It's straightforward enough for anyone with decent fitness, but the views aren't so dramatic that standing at the top for five minutes will satisfy you - you'll want to linger and actually take in the landscape. On a clear day you can see right across the water toward the Isle of Bute, and the Argyll hills roll away behind you in proper fashion.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Loch Eck is closest at just over a mile away - this makes a cracking half-day outing. Combine it with a wander down to Dunoon's seafront if the weather's kind, or save the descent for evening when the light gets interesting. Free to walk, naturally, and you can do it any time the path's dry enough. Worth the detour from the caravan sites, genuinely.
