The Smith Art Gallery & Museum is free to enter - no surprise charges at the till - and houses a surprisingly decent collection of Scottish art, local history, and decorative objects that actually merit a look rather than feeling like duty viewing.

The ground floor focuses on Stirling's past, with Roman finds and medieval artefacts that make sense if you're already exploring the castle and town. Upstairs is where it gets interesting for art lovers: Scottish painters feature heavily, and the rotating exhibitions tend to be worth checking in on if you're staying locally. The building itself, completed in 1874, is as much the draw as what hangs on the walls - all those high ceilings and natural light make it feel less like a stuffy museum and more like someone's generous Victorian drawing room.

Allow two hours maximum. It's not sprawling, which is actually a strength - you won't feel obligated to trudge through endless rooms. History types and anyone keen on Scottish artists will find genuine value here. Families with younger kids might find it a bit quiet and contemplative for their liking.
