Smorel Brake

Walk into Smorel Brake and you're suddenly under proper woodland - the kind where the canopy does its job and you actually feel sheltered from the elements. It's a forest patch near Shipston-on-Stour that doesn't announce itself loudly, which is rather the point. You get natural woodland here: decent-sized trees, forest floor that squelches after rain, the occasional scramble over roots. It's worth a couple of hours if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Kirby Farm or Newton Grove are both within easy reach - and particularly good for anyone who just wants to stretch their legs without commitment. Walkers will find it satisfying but not challenging; families with young children won't get bored provided you're not expecting a full day's entertainment. The forest doesn't require tickets or prior booking as far as I can tell, so it's entirely pressure-free.

Go during autumn if you can. The place transforms when the leaves turn, and there's something about walking through a British wood in October that settles things. Don't expect views or clearings or any of that - Smorel Brake is about the walk itself, the quiet, the smell of damp earth.
