Snapes Point

You'll find yourself at the end of a proper Devon lane, looking out across mudflats and salt marsh that shift with the light throughout the day. Snapes Point, just outside Kingsbridge, is a nature reserve where the real magic happens at low tide - that's when you can properly explore the exposed banks and spot wading birds going about their business without a care.

The walk itself is straightforward and free, though the ground can be muddy after rain so decent boots matter. Birdwatchers will get the most from it, especially between autumn and spring when migrating species pass through. Kids enjoy it too, though mainly if they're the type to hunt for shells and watch for movement in the water rather than expecting a playground.

Allow an hour or so, longer if you're serious about identifying what's flying overhead. The reserve forms part of Start Bay's wider ecosystem, and it works well as a morning outing before heading to one of the nearby campsites - Wilton Farm and Karrageen are both close by and highly rated, making this an easy add-on to a South Devon camping trip.

Winter visits are often clearer and less crowded, though the wind can pick up something fierce. Spring brings nesting birds and that sense of the coast properly waking up. Bring binoculars and patience; this is a place for observation rather than spectacle.
