Snorkel Diabaig (Torridon Snorkel Trail)

The water at Diabaig is properly cold, but that's rather the point. This snorkel trail runs along the rocky coastline near Torridon, giving you a chance to see what's actually living in the Scottish sea without needing a boat or a wetsuit - though honestly, a wetsuit helps. You're looking at kelp forests, starfish, crabs, and if you're lucky, fish that don't immediately bolt when they spot you.

It's more of a self-guided exploration than a formal attraction. Park near Diabaig village and wade in from the shore. The trail markers guide you along the rocks to the best bits, though "trail" is generous - you're basically following the coastline where the water's deep enough to see down. Most people manage an hour, maybe ninety minutes if they're the thorough type. Bring a proper snorkel set and water shoes; the rocks are sharp and the seabed's unforgiving.

This works best for families with kids old enough to handle cold water and rocky entry points - five or six upwards, ideally. Keen naturalists and rock pool hunters will absolutely love it. The views back towards Torridon and Ben Alligin are decent too, though you're focused on what's below, not above.

Timing matters. Spring and summer give you the clearest water and the most daylight. Winter? Only if you're genuinely committed. Shieldaig Camping & Cabins sits about four miles away and makes a solid base for exploring this corner of the Highlands. The snorkel trail pairs well with coastal walks around the area - you're not going to spend half a day here, but it's a proper use of a morning.
