Snowdonia Attractions

Snowdonia is one of those regions where the landscape does the talking for you. You've got dramatic mountain peaks, deep valleys carved by glaciers, and some of the most rewarding walks in Britain - all within reach of Pwllheli on the Llyn Peninsula. The whole area is a proper playground for hikers, climbers, and anyone who fancies proper scenery without the tourist crowds of the Lake District.

Snowdon itself, the highest mountain in Wales at 1,085 metres, is the obvious draw. The views from the summit stretch to the Irish Sea on a clear day - though clear days are rarer than you'd hope. You can hike up (several routes, ranging from gentle to brutal) or catch the rack railway if your knees prefer it. Beyond Snowdon, there are quieter peaks like Cader Idris and countless ridges where you'll barely see another soul. The Llanberis Pass is magnificent if you're into mountain scenery; the slate mines and old quarries tell you something about the region's industrial past too.

For families, the lower-level trails around Betws-y-Coed work better than charging straight up a mountain. The waterfalls are genuine show-stoppers, especially after rain. Walkers will spend days here without repeating a route. History buffs should investigate the Victorian mountain railways and disused slate workings.

Staying near Pwllheli puts you on the coastal edge of Snowdonia. Away From It All and Haven Hafan y Môr are within a few miles - good bases if you want mountain days with seaside evenings. Allow at least three days to do the area justice. Spring and autumn are best; summer gets rammed, winter gets serious.
