Soar Mill Cove

The walk down to Soar Mill Cove takes about fifteen minutes through proper Devon countryside - rolling fields, a bit of woodland, and then suddenly you're dropping down a steep coastal path that opens onto one of the South Hams' quieter beaches. It's not a sweeping sandy expanse; instead you get a sheltered cove with a pebbly shore, backed by red sandstone cliffs that shift colour depending on the light. The water's clear enough to make out the rocks below, which is brilliant if you're into rockpooling but means you need to watch your footing when the tide's in.

Walkers and families with patient kids will get the most from this spot. It's not a "plonk yourself for eight hours" kind of beach - more of a two-to-three-hour exploration job. The cove's small scale works in its favour; you won't battle crowds even in July. Bring shoes with grip; the descent's manageable but the path's uneven and can be slippery after rain.

The nearest facilities are in Kingsbridge, about four miles away, so grab supplies beforehand. If you're based at Karrageen Caravan Park just up the coast, this makes an easy morning venture. Pair it with South Devon Camping at Lower Terawhiti Farm if you want a longer South Devon itinerary - you're in proper walking country here, with the coastal path heading east towards Salcombe offering excellent afternoon routes. Summer's the obvious choice, but spring and autumn bring fewer visitors and better light for photography.
