Sotterley Park

The marshland around Sotterley stretches out in that particular Suffolk way - flat, open, and full of the sort of birds you won't see anywhere else. It's a nature reserve that rewards patience more than spectacle, the kind of place where you actually need binoculars and a decent field guide to get the most from it.

You're looking at wetland habitat that attracts serious birdwatchers, particularly during spring and autumn migration. Bitterns, marsh harriers, and various warblers pass through here, along with the usual suspects like redshanks and teal. Walking the reserve proper footpaths gives you proper views across the water meadows, though you'll need to know what you're looking for to avoid a disappointing blank afternoon.

This works best for committed naturalists and families with children old enough to sit still and actually use binoculars. Young kids will likely find it a bit dull - there's no cafe, no easy loop walk, and spotting wildlife takes genuine effort. Allow two to three hours if conditions are decent and you know your birds. Winter can be bleak but productive; summer's quieter.

From Beccles, it's minutes away, making it a solid add-on to a wider park holiday. Henstead Fields Caravan and Campsite sits nearly on your doorstep at less than a mile, and both Sunnyside and Hidden Meadows are within easy reach if you want to base yourself nearby. Worth fitting in if ornithology matters to you, but don't expect instant gratification.
