South Moor Wood

The entrance to South Moor Wood is easy to miss if you're not looking for it, tucked away a few miles south of York. Once you're in, though, it's properly peaceful - tall pines and broadleaf trees create a canopy that filters the light into something almost cathedral-like. The woodland floor is soft underfoot, a mix of moss and needle litter that deadens your footsteps.

It's the kind of place where walkers will spend a good two to three hours without feeling rushed. The paths are well-trodden but not overwalked, so you'll see the occasional dog walker or local runner but rarely feel crowded. Families with younger children might find an hour enough before legs get tired - there's not a great deal to do except walk and look, which is rather the point.

Worth knowing: access appears to be free, though there's no visitor facility here - no cafe, no car park fee, no frills. Come prepared with a good pair of boots if it's been wet, as the paths can get boggy. Spring brings bluebells if you time it right, and autumn colours are decent enough.

If you're based at The Spinney Wild Camping just down the road, this makes an obvious morning walk before heading into York itself. It's not a destination that demands a special trip, but as a pocket of green within easy reach of the city, it fills a gap nicely.
