Housed in a converted Victorian building in Yeovil, this local museum tells the story of South Somerset through objects people have actually left behind. You'll find everything from Roman pottery shards to Victorian domestic bits - the kind of everyday stuff that makes you realise how little has changed, really. Farm tools, old photographs, textiles. It's small enough that you won't need more than an hour, which makes it ideal for a rainy afternoon when you're staying at Esme's Escape or Swallowfield Glamping nearby.

The collection works best if you're already interested in local history or if you've got older children keen on archaeology. Younger kids might find it a bit static after twenty minutes - there's not much hands-on stuff here. But if you're the type who actually reads the labels and enjoys putting together a picture of how people lived, you'll get proper value from it.

What sets it apart is the focus on South Somerset specifically rather than generic heritage. You learn about the area's textile industry, its agricultural rhythms, the way communities shaped themselves around industry and landscape. It's the kind of place that makes sense after you've already walked some of the local country parks in the region.

Best visited midweek when it's quiet. The staff know their stuff and will chat if you ask questions. Worth building into a morning before heading elsewhere, but don't plan your whole day around it.
