South Tail

The stretch of sand at South Tail, just outside Bideford, is one of those Devon beaches that doesn't try too hard. No fancy cafes, no car park madness, just a proper bit of coastline where you can actually breathe. The beach itself is fine shingle and sand depending on the tide, backed by cliffs that aren't dramatic but pleasant enough. What makes it work is the peace - it's quieter than Westward Ho! down the coast, and you won't be fighting for space in summer.

Walkers will get more from this than sunbathers, to be honest. The cliff-top paths either side are where the real appeal lies, with decent views across the Bristol Channel. Low tide reveals pools worth investigating if you've got kids who can entertain themselves with rockpooling. The beach itself slopes gently, so it's manageable for families, though there's no lifeguard presence as far as I could establish.

If you're camped at Ruda Holiday Park or Ocean Pitch Campsite - both just four miles away - this makes a decent half-day outing. Don't expect facilities; there's nothing there. Bring what you need. The nearest proper amenities are back in Bideford itself. Worth the short drive from your holiday park base, especially if weather's reasonable and you fancy a walk rather than a lounge. Come off-season if you want it all to yourself.
