South Wales Miners Museum

The South Wales Miners Museum sits just outside Port Talbot, housed in what was once a working colliery. You're walking through actual pit buildings, not a sanitised reconstruction, which immediately sets the tone - this is the real thing. The museum tells the story of the men who spent their lives underground in the South Wales coalfield, through photographs, artefacts, and personal accounts that don't shy away from the brutal reality of the work.

Inside, you'll find pit helmets, tools, wages slips, and displays covering everything from the geology of the coal seams to the social history of mining communities. What strikes you most is how young some of the boys were when they started work. This isn't a cheerful experience, but it's an important one. History types will find plenty to engage with here - the economic story of Wales is written into these walls.

Families with older children (ten plus, really) will get something from it, though younger kids might find it a bit heavy-going. Allow a couple of hours if you're reading properly. The museum has a proper cafe, which helps break up the visit.

If you're basing yourself at Willow Springs Campsite nearby, this makes an excellent half-day excursion. It's the kind of place that adds weight to a South Wales itinerary rather than being a standalone draw, but that's precisely why it matters. Port Talbot itself isn't a obvious holiday destination, but that's also why visiting here feels less touristy and more real.
