South Yorkshire Transport Museum

Rotherham's transport museum sits in what used to be the Crich Tramway Depot, and if you've got any interest in how Britain moved people around, it's absolutely worth the detour. The collection spans buses, trams, trolleybuses and lorries - proper industrial heritage stuff that tells you more about working life in South Yorkshire than any textbook could manage.

What actually gets you is the scale of it. You're walking through rows of genuine vehicles, many restored to their original state, and you realise just how different public transport looked even fifty years ago. The trams are the real draw - painted in their original liveries, they're genuinely lovely to look at. Kids tend to get a solid hour or so from climbing aboard and exploring the cabs, though if you're expecting hands-on interactive stuff throughout, you might find it a touch old-school.

The museum runs on a volunteer basis mostly, so opening times can be a bit patchy - worth checking ahead rather than turning up and finding the gates shut. Admission is free, which means there's zero financial risk if your lot loses interest after 45 minutes. Allow two hours if you're actually going to read the information boards and poke about properly.

If you're based at Hooton Lodge Farm, it's barely half an hour away, making it a decent rainy-day option for a park holiday in the area. It's not going to blow anyone's mind, but it's solid social history and the kind of place that grows on you the more time you spend wandering around.
