Spa Valley Railway - (Tunbridge Wells West Station)

Steam trains still run through the Weald of Kent, which feels properly mad in 2024. The Spa Valley Railway operates vintage locomotives from Tunbridge Wells West Station, pulling passenger carriages through genuinely lovely countryside toward Eridge. You'll see nothing but green fields and woodland for much of the journey - the sort of views that make you remember why you bothered leaving home.

It's brilliant for families with kids old enough to sit still for an hour without screaming, and trainspotters will absolutely lose their minds. The real appeal is the experience itself rather than white-knuckle thrills. The line runs seven miles, taking roughly 45 minutes each way, so factor in a couple of hours minimum if you want to stop at Eridge station and poke about before heading back.

Weather matters here - a seat on an open carriage in June is magic; the same seat in November is grim. Check opening dates before you go, as the railway doesn't run year-round. Admission isn't free, but prices are reasonable for what you get.

If you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots - Honnington Farm is closest at just over three miles away - the railway makes for a decent half-day outing. Combine it with the Pantiles in town for a full day. It won't blow your mind, but it's a proper slice of heritage railway charm without having to trek to the Cotswolds.
