Toad Rock

You'll find Toad Rock jutting out from the sandstone cliffs near Tunbridge Wells - a modest but oddly compelling landmark that's become something of a local curiosity. It's essentially a weathered outcrop of stone that, if you squint and use your imagination, vaguely resembles a toad. The reality is less dramatic than the legend suggests, but that's rather the appeal.

It's a straightforward walk from Tunbridge Wells, taking you through the High Rocks area with decent views across the Wealden landscape. The rock itself isn't going to occupy hours of your time, but as a quick detour on a longer ramble it works fine. Kids find it a bit silly - which is the point, really. Photographers might waste twenty minutes trying to frame it at the right angle to justify the amphibian comparison.

Free to visit, obviously. Allow twenty to thirty minutes if you're making it a dedicated stop, longer if you're combining it with a proper walk through the surrounding countryside. The best time is a clear day when the views actually matter.
