Sparkford Hill Copse

The woodland here sits just outside Yeovil, a proper slice of Somerset forest that doesn't announce itself loudly. You're walking through beech and oak, the kind of place where the light filters through in columns on a decent day. It's the sort of spot locals know about but tourists often miss entirely.

The copse works best for a gentle woodland wander rather than anything ambitious - an hour or so will do you fine, though there's no rush if you want to just sit on a log and let the quiet do its thing. Families with younger kids will appreciate the manageable size; teenagers might find it a bit low-key unless they're genuinely keen on trees. If you're staying at Long Hazel Park just down the road, it's an easy escape from the caravan site without needing to drive anywhere.

There's something quite refreshing about a wood that's just a wood. No visitor centre, no car park fee, no staged photo opportunities. You get the shade, the birdsong, and the smell of damp earth after rain. The proximity to Hadspen Glamping makes it useful if you're doing a longer Somerset stay - worth combining with a proper walk elsewhere rather than treating it as a destination in itself.

Best visited when you've got time to move slowly. Winter's clearer but bleaker; spring and early summer are when it properly comes alive.
