Spearshill Wood

The footpaths through Spearshill Wood cut through proper old-growth Essex woodland - the kind of place where you can actually lose the sound of the A127 for stretches at a time. It's mostly beech and oak, dense enough in summer that you walk in half-shade even on bright days. The ground's uneven, roots everywhere, so it's not a ramble for the very young unless they're confident on their feet.

You get decent views across the woodland floor - bluebells in spring if you time it right, though summer feels greener and less crowded than April. The walks are accessible from various entry points around Billericay, though parking can be a bit hit-or-miss on weekends. Allow an hour for a proper loop without rushing.

This works well if you're staying at Barleylands Campsite just down the road - adds some proper forest bathing to what's otherwise a fairly built-up corner of Essex. It's not dramatic, and there's no café or facilities inside, so come prepared. Kids who like building dens and spotting wildlife will get more from it than those after a structured walk. Locals clearly use it regularly, which says something about its bones - it feels cared for without being manicured to death. Worth the detour if you're in the area, particularly if woodland is your thing and you want somewhere with actual character rather than a managed country park.
