Spennells Valley Nature Reserve

Walking the well-maintained paths through this 42-hectare slice of proper countryside just outside Kidderminster, you'll find yourself wondering why more people don't know about this place. The reserve spreads across meadowland, woodland and wetland areas that genuinely feel wild despite being so close to town.

Birdwatchers will have a field day here - the mix of habitats draws everything from kingfishers along the stream to skylarks over the grassland. I spotted a kestrel hovering above the meadows on my last visit, though the real highlight was stumbling across a family of foxes near the woodland edge.

Families with younger children might find the paths a bit rough in places, but older kids who enjoy a proper walk will love the freedom to explore. The reserve feels genuinely unspoilt - no visitor centre or formal facilities, just nature doing its thing.

Allow a good two hours if you want to see everything properly. Early morning visits are best for wildlife, though the meadows look lovely in late afternoon light too. It's free to wander at will, making it a brilliant addition to a camping holiday at nearby spots like Wolverley Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Lincomb Lock Caravan Park.
