Spring Wood

Spring Wood is a proper woodland walk just outside Preston - the kind of place you head to when you want trees, quiet, and a proper stretch of the legs without needing to drive hours out of the way. It's a genuine forest rather than a manicured park, which means you get the real thing: tangled undergrowth, proper paths that wind through mature trees, and that lovely earthy smell that only an old wood can give you.

Walkers will find it genuinely worth an hour or two, depending on how deep you fancy going. The paths are decent enough, though you'll want proper footwear if it's been wet - Lancashire's not known for staying dry. It's the sort of place where kids can actually run about and climb things without someone telling them off, which is refreshing.

For those staying at Calder Farm, just 0.8 miles away, this is practically on your doorstep and saves you from another drive. It pairs well with other local spots if you're basing yourself around Preston for a few days. The nearby holiday parks - Northwood Caravan, Dale Hey Farm, and Beacon Fell View - all position you reasonably close for a morning or afternoon visit.

Head here early if you can. The wood gets foot traffic, but it's nothing like the honeypot spots. Autumn's the best time, when the light filters through properly and there's actual atmosphere. Spring's decent too, if you like bluebells and mud in equal measure.
