St Andrew's Church, Westhall

The church sits on a rise outside Westhall, a few miles east of Halesworth, and it's worth the short detour if you're camping in the area. St Andrew's is a proper medieval parish church - fifteenth century mostly, with the sort of flint and stone work you find dotted across Suffolk's countryside. Inside, the wooden roof is the real draw: it's got ornate hammerbeams and carved figures that catch the light nicely on a clear day. The chancel is decent too, if you're into ecclesiastical architecture.

It's the kind of place that appeals to walkers and anyone interested in East Anglian church history rather than families after a big day out. You'll spend twenty minutes here, maximum, unless you're the type to sit quietly in pews. There's usually no charge to look around - these village churches tend to be open during daylight hours, though it's worth checking locally.

If you're staying at Sunnyside Campsite just down the road, it's an easy leg-stretch walk. The wider area has plenty of other camping options - Henstead Fields and Green Haven are both within a few miles if you're planning a longer Norfolk-Suffolk break. Combine it with walks through the local farmland or a visit to Halesworth itself, which has decent shops and pubs. The church doesn't dominate an itinerary, but it's the sort of stop that makes a countryside holiday feel properly lived in rather than rushed through.
