St. Angus's Church

The small stone church sits quietly at the edge of Lochearnhead, easy to miss if you're driving through but worth stopping for if you've got ten minutes. St. Angus's is genuinely old - the sort of place where you can feel the weight of centuries without it being remotely pretentious about it. The interior is simple, austere even, with the kind of worn wooden pews that tell you this is still a working parish church, not a museum.

You're not looking at a grand architectural statement here. What appeals is the authenticity - this is how rural Scottish churches actually function, and that matters. The churchyard itself is worth a wander, with weathered gravestones that read like local history.

Histor types will get the most from a visit, particularly if you're interested in how the Reformation shaped Scottish worship. It's not a destination in itself, but if you're staying at either Balquhidder Braes Holiday Park or Loch Earn Leisure Park - both excellent bases for the area - it's exactly the sort of minor diversion that fills an afternoon pleasantly. The walk from the car park is straightforward, takes perhaps five minutes. Allow fifteen minutes inside unless you're keen on gravestone rubbings or very local genealogy.

Admission appears to be free, which seems right for a functioning parish church. Go on a weekday morning rather than Sunday if you want to avoid service times. The light through those small windows is particularly good in late afternoon.
