St Catherine's Church

The church sits on a steep clifftop above Ventnor, which is either charming or a bit of a slog depending on your knees. St Catherine's is one of those proper old Island landmarks - a lighthouse-church hybrid from the 1840s that feels more like something from a Victorian fantasy than a standard parish building. The octagonal tower isn't just decorative; it actually served as a beacon for ships passing the treacherous waters below.

Inside, it's intimate and peaceful - whitewashed walls, a working pipe organ, and enough local history absorbed into the stonework to keep a history buff occupied for a good twenty minutes. The real draw, though, is standing outside on the terrace. The view across the bay towards Shanklin and the needles is genuinely stunning, especially on a clear day. You get a proper sense of why the Victorians thought this spot was worth the architectural effort.

It's free to visit, and you'll want to allow about an hour including the walk up from Ventnor town centre - longer if you're not quick on hills. Families with small children might find the climb annoying; older kids and keen walkers will appreciate it more. If you're based at Isle of Wight Coastal Park or any of the holiday parks within a couple of miles, it makes an excellent half-morning excursion. Best visited on a clear day when the view actually justifies the effort. Go early to dodge the crowds, especially in summer.
