St Clederus' Church, St Clether

The church sits in a proper steep-sided valley near Launceston, and you'll know you're getting close when the landscape suddenly drops away beneath you. St Clederus' is a medieval affair - granite built, with a tower that's seen off everything Cornwall can throw at it. The walk down to it is the real draw: a narrow wooded valley that feels like you've stepped back about four centuries. Inside, it's quiet and genuine, without the polished-up feeling you get at bigger churches. The font's ancient, the walls are thick, and there's actual atmosphere rather than tourist management.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a five-minute stop - allow a proper half-hour minimum to walk down, have a look around, and climb back out again. The return journey is genuinely steep, so it's not ideal if you've got very small children or anyone with mobility issues. The valley itself is the main draw - the church is almost incidental to the landscape.

It's free to wander in, though there's nowhere to park right next to it. Trewithen Farm Glamping is barely over a mile away, and Ekopod's even closer at just a few minutes drive, so you could easily make it a quiet morning expedition between breakfast and heading elsewhere. Best to visit when it's actually open - check ahead or be prepared for a locked door. The surrounding valley's worth the visit regardless, but you'll want to combine it with other nearby attractions rather than making a special trip.
