St Cuthbert's Chapel

A tiny stone chapel sits alone on the Northumberland coast near Seahouses, roughly two miles offshore on St Cuthbert's Cave. The structure dates back centuries, built to honour the saint who lived as a hermit on nearby islands. You can't actually reach it without serious planning - the cave is only accessible at low tide, and even then it's a proper trek across rocks and through water.

For most visitors, the real appeal is spotting it from the shore or visiting the nearby St Cuthbert's Cave itself, which is far more manageable. The cave entrance is atmospheric: dark, damp, and genuinely atmospheric without being touristy. Local legend says Cuthbert himself meditated here. Whether that's true hardly matters when you're standing in centuries-old shadows.

History buffs will find this corner of the coast endlessly rewarding. The wider area - between Seahouses and Bamburgh - is thick with Northumbrian heritage. Bamburgh Castle looms spectacularly inland, and the offshore islands where Cuthbert actually lived are visible on clear days.

Timing matters enormously here. Check tide times before you go - you need a decent low tide window. Spring tides give you more time but stronger currents. Summer's the obvious choice for weather, though autumn can be clearer. Allow three to four hours minimum if you're attempting the full island visit.

It's genuinely specialist stuff rather than family entertainment, though older kids with genuine curiosity about saints and early Christianity will be absorbed. The caravan parks around Bamburgh and Beadnell make decent bases for exploring this stretch properly.
