The Grove

The Grove is a proper woodland nature reserve just outside Bamburgh, tucked away from the tourist trail that snakes around the castle and beach. You're walking through mature trees here - oak, ash, birch - with a network of paths that wind through dappled light and emerge onto open grassland where you can actually see the coast in the distance.

It's the sort of place that appeals to anyone who wants greenery without crowds. Walkers will find decent trails that don't demand crampons or GPS. Families with younger kids get a genuine sense of exploring without the pressure of ticking off a famous landmark. Birdwatchers come for the woodland species, though you'll need patience and binoculars to spot anything interesting.

Allow an hour to ninety minutes to do the reserve properly - longer if you're stopping to identify plants or just sitting about. There's no cafe, no gift shop, no visitor centre nonsense. It's fairly low-key, which is either the entire point or a reason to drive past.

Stay at Bamburgh Under Canvas or Budle Farm Campsite and you're within walking distance. The reserve fits well into a broader coastal Northumberland trip - combine it with Bamburgh Castle and the beach, or push further north to tackle the Northumberland Coast Path. After the reserve, Bamburgh itself has decent fish and chips and proper sandy beaches that beat the usual holiday-park entertainment.
