St. Cyrus National Nature Reserve (car park & visitor centre)

The car park and visitor centre at St Cyrus sit right where the River North Esk meets the sea, and it's genuinely one of those places where you arrive expecting a quick leg-stretch and end up staying hours. The reserve itself is a proper bit of coastal magic - red sandstone cliffs, shingle beaches, and salt marshes that attract everything from ospreys to terns depending on the season.

You get a real sense of what's happening ecologically from the visitor centre, which is helpful if you're not the type to wander in blind. There's a network of paths that range from dead easy riverside strolls to proper clifftop walks with proper views across to Montrose and beyond. The beach itself is cracking for families - wide, reasonably sheltered, and you won't fight crowds like you would at the honeypot spots further south.

Birders will have a field day here, particularly spring and autumn when migration is on. Even if you're not that keen on spotting, the light on those red rocks in late afternoon is worth the visit alone. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're walking the full loop; thirty minutes if you just want a stretch and a breath of sea air.

It's free to access, which is brilliant. St Cyrus Holiday Park is basically on your doorstep at under two miles away, making this an obvious morning or evening stop if you're staying nearby. The visitor centre has decent facilities and the car park is spacious enough even in summer.
