St Gwynhoydl

You'll find this little church tucked away in the Pwllheli area of Gwynedd, and it's exactly the sort of place that rewards a quiet afternoon's wander. St Gwynhoydl is a proper working church with genuine character - the kind of spot where you can actually sit down for five minutes without hearing a tour group.

The church itself is modest but atmospheric. Weathered stone, low doorways, the smell of old wood and stone that you only get in places that have been standing for centuries. If you're into Welsh ecclesiastical history, there's enough here to occupy you for a solid half-hour. The real appeal, though, is the peace of it. No crowds, no entrance fees, no faffing about with opening times that don't match the website.

It works brilliantly as a stop during a wider walk around Pwllheli. The nearby Tyn Ddol Camping and Glamping is barely half a mile away, and Glampio Coed Glamping sits at less than two miles - so if you're based at either spot for a park holiday, this is an easy detour that breaks up the day nicely.

Families with older kids will find it genuinely interesting rather than boring, though younger children might flag quickly unless they're into exploring. Walkers passing through the area should absolutely call in. Bring a camera for the stonework and don't expect much in the way of facilities, but that's part of its charm.
