St James's Church

The church sits on Wareham's high street like it's always owned the place - which, to be fair, it has for about eight centuries. St James's is a proper medieval structure with that honest, no-nonsense Dorset stone work that speaks to centuries of Sunday services, weddings, and the occasional burial. You'll find the usual ecclesiastical treasures inside: decent stained glass, a wooden roof that's worth looking up at, and the kind of quiet that makes you actually appreciate it.

This is really one for architecture enthusiasts or anyone with a genuine interest in parish churches. It's not a spectacle - don't expect soaring arches or jaw-dropping decoration. What you get instead is authenticity and a genuine sense of local history. The sort of place where you can actually imagine people worshipping here across the centuries rather than feeling like you're in a museum.

Wareham itself is a decent little market town with proper character, so you can easily combine a church visit with a walk around the town's Saxon walls or a browse of the independent shops. If you're camping at Woodyhyde or Norden Farm, both within striking distance, it's a ten-minute walk into town. Worth popping into if you're exploring the area, but don't rearrange your holiday plans around it. Free admission, naturally, and there's no set opening hours nonsense - it's a working parish church, not a tourist attraction trying to monetise itself.
