The remains of St John's Hospital sit just outside Ludlow, a medieval foundation that's part archaeology dig, part local history lesson. What you're looking at is essentially rubble and ground plans - don't expect standing walls or anything Instagram-friendly. But if you care about how medieval poor relief actually worked, this is genuinely interesting stuff.

The hospital dates to around the 12th century and operated as a charitable institution for the sick and infirm. Excavations have revealed the layout of the buildings, and there's real archaeology happening here, not just a plaque in a field. It's the sort of place where you can actually walk the footprint of where people lived and died centuries ago, which hits differently once you're stood there.

History enthusiasts will get the most from a visit - casual tourists will probably spend fifteen minutes maximum and move on. Families with older kids interested in medieval life might find it worthwhile, but younger children will struggle with the lack of visible structure or interactive elements. It's free to access, which is the main thing going for it logistically.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Ludlow Touring & Holiday Home Park is barely over a mile away - it's worth a quick detour on a ramble around Ludlow itself. The town has far more to offer historically, but this adds a layer of depth if you're properly interested in the period. Allow an hour if you're thorough, twenty minutes if you're just ticking it off.
