St Margaret's Church, Bethersden

The tower of St Margaret's rises above Bethersden village like a proper anchor point - medieval stone that's watched over the Weald for centuries. It's a working parish church, so you're not wandering into a museum; you're stepping into something that still matters to the community here, about five miles south of Ashford.

Inside, there's genuine medieval work worth pausing for - the chancel and parts of the nave date back to the 14th century. The tower itself is handsome Early English, with decent views across the village if you fancy the climb (though do check someone's about first). The sort of church that rewards a slow look rather than a rushed tick-box visit.

It's free to get in, assuming the door's unlocked - which it usually is during daylight. Allow 20 minutes to half an hour, longer if you're the type who reads every inscription and sketches gargoyles. Families with young kids might find it quiet and calm; historians will spot the layers of centuries in the stonework.

If you're based at Wildside Camping or Wood View Farm Glamping - both excellent spots nearby - St Margaret's makes a gentle morning walk, particularly on a Sunday when there's actual life in the place. It's not dramatic or showy, but that's rather the point. This is the real fabric of English village life, not done up for visitors. The countryside around it is lovely for wandering afterwards.
