St Mary, Abberley

The church sits on a rise above the village, red sandstone glowing warm in afternoon light. St Mary's in Abberley is one of those medieval churches that reward a proper wander inside - Victorian restoration work is evident everywhere, but the bones underneath are genuinely old. You'll find decent stained glass, carved stone work that's held up surprisingly well, and that particular smell of old wood and stone that you only get in churches that have been standing for centuries.

It's a quiet stop rather than a destination in itself. Twenty minutes max if you're just having a look round, longer if you're the type to sit and read the wall plaques. The churchyard is peaceful enough for a brief wander, though nothing spectacular from a tombstone-touring perspective. The real appeal is if you're already exploring the Abberley area - it's close to Worcester, so combines easily with a broader Midlands trip.

Historically minded visitors will find it worth the detour. Families with restless kids will find it a bit static unless they're old enough to appreciate church architecture. If you're staying at one of the local holiday parks - Hidden Valley Camping or Lodge Coppice are both within a few miles - it makes a decent morning leg stretch combined with a walk round the village.
