St. Mary Magdalene Church, Pentney

The ruins of St. Mary Magdalene sit quietly in the Norfolk countryside just east of King's Lynn, a sobering reminder of what happens when a church outlives its congregation. What remains is mostly the chancel and nave - sturdy flint walls that have weathered seven centuries, though the roof disappeared long ago. You can still make out the window tracery and the traces of medieval stonework if you look closely.

This is very much a place for history types and serious church enthusiasts rather than casual day-trippers. There's something oddly moving about standing in a roofless building where services once echoed, but it's not a cheerful sort of moving. Truth is, Pentney isn't destination-level stuff. But if you're already exploring the quieter corners of central Norfolk and you like medieval history, it's worth a detour. The drive takes five minutes from King's Lynn. Don't expect crowds or facilities, just medieval bones and silence.
