St Mary the Virgin Church, Gisburn

The church sits right in the village centre of Gisburn, just a short drive south of Clitheroe, and it's genuinely worth stopping for if you're camping or glamping nearby at Holgates or Parkdean Resorts. St Mary the Virgin is a proper medieval church - solid, unshowy, the kind of place that tells you more about rural Lancashire than any heritage centre could.

What you get is a 15th-century building with some lovely original features, including a tower that's stood watch over this corner of the Ribble Valley for centuries. The interior has that particular quiet that old churches do - flagstones worn by footsteps, brass plaques, and enough history embedded in the stonework to keep you thinking for twenty minutes or so.

It's not a sprawling tourist trap. You'll spend maybe thirty to forty minutes here, which makes it ideal for breaking up a holiday park day when the kids need a change of scenery or the weather's turned a bit dodgy. The walk from the car to the church is minimal, so it suits all ages and fitness levels.

Gisburn itself is tiny - barely a village really - but that's part of its charm. Park at Holgates just down the road and you've got easy access to both the church and the broader Ribble Valley walking opportunities. The church is free to enter (as most are), though opening hours vary, so check ahead or just try the door.
