St Mary's Church, Boxford

The church sits at the heart of Boxford village, a flint-and-stone medieval structure that's been quietly anchoring this corner of Suffolk for centuries. Walk through the churchyard and you'll find yourself surrounded by old graves tilting at various angles, the kind of place where time feels properly stretched out.

Inside, there's genuine character. The nave has that particular coldness and calm you get in old parish churches, with some decent medieval details if you know what to look for - though honestly, it's the atmosphere that sticks with you more than any specific feature. The village itself is the real draw here; Boxford is the sort of place where you could spend an afternoon poking about without a plan, picking up groceries from the shop, sitting by the stream.

It works well as a walking destination from either Polstead Country Park or The Huts at Woodthorpes, both just a couple of miles away. If you're staying at either and fancy breaking up park time with a proper walk, Boxford makes a decent half-day excursion. The church itself won't occupy more than twenty minutes unless you're deep into ecclesiastical architecture, but the walk to it and a wander round the village could easily stretch to two hours.

No admission charge. There's usually someone about during daylight hours, though it's worth checking if you're making a special journey. Late afternoon is nicest, when the light starts getting that golden quality and the churchyard feels less like a historic site and more like what it actually is - the village's backyard.
