St Peter's

The church sits quietly on the edge of Retford, one of those Nottinghamshire landmarks you could easily miss if you weren't paying attention. St Peter's is a proper medieval affair - the sort of building that's been standing watch over the town since well before anyone thought to tarmac the roads around it. Inside, there's decent stonework and some interesting architectural details if you're into that sort of thing, though it won't take you hours to work through.

It's the kind of stop that makes sense if you're already in the area rather than a reason to plan your entire trip around. Families with older kids who can appreciate the history will get something from it; younger ones might find twenty minutes is enough. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Olive Tree Caravan & Camping Park is barely three miles away, or Waterfront Country Park if you fancy somewhere with a bit more going on - then a quick look at St Peter's slots in nicely between breakfast and whatever else you've got planned for the day.

Access shouldn't be an issue for most people, though you'll want to check opening hours before you head over - churches can be funny about visitors during services or if the vicar's having a day off. Free entry is standard for these parish churches, so at least there's no money to worry about. Retford itself has decent shops and cafes if you want to make an afternoon of being in town.
