St Petrock’s Church

The churchyard at St Petrock's sits quiet on the edge of Okehampton, Devon, and unless you're deliberately looking for it, you'll probably drive straight past. It's a proper medieval church, built to a scale that feels almost intimate compared to the grand cathedral fantasies you find elsewhere in the county. The stone is weathered grey, the roof slate-dark, and there's a real sense that this place has been doing its job for centuries without needing to shout about it.

Inside, the space opens up more than you'd expect from outside. There's decent stained glass and the usual vault of old prayer books, but what strikes you most is the quiet. No ambient music, no gift shop, just the genuine article - a working parish church that happens to have medieval bones. If you're into church architecture or local history, there's enough detail here to spend a solid half hour. Families won't find this a patch on the great cathedrals, mind you, and it's not the kind of place to drag reluctant teenagers to.

The real advantage is location. Lydford Caravan & Camping Park is less than half a mile away, making this an easy morning walk before heading up to Dartmoor proper. If you're based at Wolf Wood Treehouses and want a proper leg-stretch, it's a reasonable drive. Free entry almost certainly, though opening hours aren't always predictable for smaller churches - best ring ahead or check the porch noticeboard.
