St Saviour's Church, Retford

The tower of St Saviour's dominates Retford's Market Square - you can't miss it, really. The interior's worth a look if you're into that sort of thing: decent woodwork, some interesting monuments, and the kind of quiet that only old churches manage.

It's the sort of place that appeals most to architecture buffs and local history types rather than families expecting interactive displays or drama. You'll spend twenty minutes inside, maybe longer if you're photographing details. Free to enter, as most parish churches are, though opening hours depend on the vicar's schedule - best ring ahead or check the noticeboard outside.

If you're camped at Hallcroft Fishery or Olive Tree just down the road, St Saviour's makes a decent rainy-day five-minute walk into town. It's not a showstopper on its own, but it anchors Retford's town centre nicely and tells you something about the place's medieval importance. Pair it with a wander round the market square and a coffee at one of the cafes - that's a proper half-hour well spent. For something with more bells on, Clumber Park's caravan site sits closer to the big country estate and its woodland walks, which genuinely are worth the drive if you've got restless kids or want proper outdoor miles.
