Stackpole Head

The cliffs at Stackpole Head rear up from the sea like something from a different coastline altogether - all rust-red sandstone and dramatic drops, nothing like the grey limestone you'd expect round Pembroke. This is a proper nature reserve, managed for the wildlife rather than the tourists, which means it stays wonderfully quiet even when other bits of the Pembrokeshire coast are heaving.

You'll walk through coastal grassland studded with sea pinks and thrift before reaching the headland itself. The views back towards Bosherston and across Carmarthen Bay are genuinely commanding - the kind of vista that makes you understand why people drive two hours to get here. The cliffs are home to razorbills, guillemots and kittiwakes, so bring binoculars if you're into that sort of thing. Photographers will find themselves returning to the same spot repeatedly, waiting for the light to shift.

It's a moderate walk of about an hour from the nearest parking, mostly flat until the final approach to the head itself. Families with primary-school kids will manage fine; toddlers and very young legs might struggle with the uneven ground. The reserve sits about 2.6 miles from Freshwater East Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, making it an easy morning or afternoon outing if you're based at one of the nearby parks like Parke Farm or Sky Meadow Glamping.

Free to access, naturally. Go on a weekday morning if you value solitude, or on a rough-weather day when the sea's properly angry and the light comes sideways through the clouds.
