Stackpole Quay

You'll find yourself at the end of a narrow country lane near Pembroke, where Stackpole Quay opens up into one of Pembrokeshire's quietest corners. It's a proper working haven - a small tidal inlet where a handful of boats bob about, backed by salt marshes and woodland that feels genuinely removed from the tourist crush of Tenby.

The main draw here is the walking. A trail loops around the quay itself, taking in views across the estuary and into the surrounding nature reserve. The path is easy enough - no scrambling required - and the whole loop takes about 45 minutes at a leisurely pace. The real appeal is the wildlife: herons stalk the shallows, cormorants dive offshore, and in winter you'll spot curlews and other waders. Spring brings nesting birds, though access is restricted to certain areas then.

It's not a "destination" in the conventional sense. You won't spend hours here. But if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Freshwater East is just under two miles away - it's an excellent morning or early evening walk, especially when the light starts getting low. The quay itself has a café tucked away, though hours are variable.

Admission is free and there's a small car park. Families with young children find it manageable; walkers will appreciate the quietness. Bring decent shoes - the paths can be muddy after rain. It works brilliantly as a gentle counterpoint to bigger Pembrokeshire attractions, somewhere to actually hear yourself think.
