Standedge Tunnel & Visitor Centre - Canal & River Trust

The tunnel stretches nearly three miles under the Pennines - one of the longest, highest and deepest canal tunnels in Britain. You walk through the darkness with water lapping at your feet, torchlight picking out the brick-lined walls that miners carved out two centuries ago. It's genuinely atmospheric, and the visitor centre at Greenfield does a solid job explaining how they managed it without explosives, just picks and determination.

The walk itself takes about forty minutes there and back, depending on how slowly you move through the tunnel. It's not strenuous but you need a decent torch and sensible shoes - the towpath gets wet and slippery. Families with older kids (say eight and up) tend to enjoy it; younger ones sometimes find the darkness a bit much. The visitor centre has displays on the engineering, the navvies who built it, and the canal's role in the Industrial Revolution - proper interesting stuff if you're into that sort of thing.

It's free to visit the centre, though there's a modest charge if you want the guided tunnel walk, which is worth doing if you want the full story. Early mornings are quieter than weekends. The location works well if you're based at Dovestone or Secret Valley Escapes - both are within easy driving distance - and you can combine it with walks along the Tame Valley or up Dovestone Clough. It's the sort of place that sticks with you: slightly eerie, utterly real, no Instagram gloss.
