Stanmore Country Park

The fields around Stanmore roll on longer than you'd expect just outside Borehamwood. Stanmore Country Park is one of those places that sneaks up on you - no grand entrance, no visitor centre full of branded merchandise, just proper countryside that feels genuinely removed from the commuter belt rumbling past on the M25.

You get woodland walks threading through beech and oak, open grassland where you can actually breathe, and the kind of light that makes you understand why people move out here. It's the sort of spot walkers actually prefer to the more famous destinations - fewer Instagram crowds, better for letting dogs off lead, and the paths are well-maintained without feeling over-manicured.

Historically it's tied into the Stanmore area's old estates, though the park itself is more about the walking than heritage plaques. Allow two to three hours if you want to do the main loops properly. Families with younger kids might find an hour sufficient before they're ready to move on.

Free to access, no car park fees that I encountered. Best in autumn when the woodland actually earns its keep, though spring's decent too.

If you're staying at Aldenham Country Park just down the road, or any of the caravan spots nearby, this is an obvious add-on for a morning walk. It breaks up a park holiday nicely - proper exercise without the tourist machine. Worth the detour if you're in Hertfordshire, though it's not the sort of place you'd plan a whole trip around.
